Spain Student Life & Work Rights

Real Decreto 629/2022 work rights, resident NIE/TIE registration, and post-grad pathways in Continental Europe.

Legal 30 Hours/Week Student Work Rights

Under Spain's progressive immigration reform, **Real Decreto 629/2022**, international students enrolled in accredited higher education programs (such as undergraduate, graduate, or official master's degrees at Universidad de Salamanca) are granted **automatic legal authorization to work up to 30 hours per week** during their studies.

  • No Separate Work Permit Needed: The student visa/TIE acts as automatic work authorization, drastically reducing employer administrative overhead.
  • Flexible Schedules: Students can balance part-time employment, internships, or language teaching assistants (Auxiliares) alongside their class hours.
  • Full-Time Options: During summer and winter academic holidays, students may transition to full-time employment contracts.

Arrival Checklist: Securing Your TIE Card

Upon landing in Spain, your initial passport visa stamp is valid for exactly 90 days. Within your first 30 days of arrival in Salamanca, you must register as a resident and obtain your physical **Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE)** card:

  1. Empadronamiento (Padrón): Register your rental lease contract at the Salamanca Ayuntamiento (City Hall) to secure an official address registry certificate.
  2. Toma de Huellas appointment: Book an appointment (Cita Previa) at the National Police Station (Comisaría de Policía de Salamanca) for fingerprint submission.
  3. TIE Card Collection: Approx. 30 to 45 days after fingerprinting, collect your plastic TIE card, which displays your official Spanish NIE (Foreign Identification Number).

Post-Study Job Seeker Visa

Graduates from Universidad de Salamanca are eligible for a **12-month Job Seeker Visa (Autorización de residencia para búsqueda de empleo)**. This permits graduates to remain in Spain legally for up to 1 year post-graduation to find professional employment or establish their own business. Once a job contract is secured, this status seamlessly converts to a standard highly-skilled professional work visa (Visado de Trabajo).
