Where Modern International Law & Global Exploration Began
Chartered in 1218 by King Alfonso IX of León and confirmed by papal bull in 1255, Universidad de Salamanca is one of the four great universities of medieval Europe alongside Bologna, Paris, and Oxford.
In the 16th century, the celebrated School of Salamanca (Escuela de Salamanca), led by Francisco de Vitoria and Domingo de Soto, established the foundational principles of modern international law, human rights, and market economics.
